The Festival

Island Vibe, the annual festival of Soul, Roots, Reggae and Island Culture, is on again between

October 24 - 26. Held at magnificent Home Beach at Point Lookout on Minjerribah [Stradbroke Island], the festival features three stages of Australia and New Zealand's finest roots acts and selectors, fire and circus performers, markets and kids workshops.

Formerly known as Island Time, the event has changed name this year due to a rival event trade marking 'Island Time' and forbidding its use.

Held annually on Stradbroke Island over three huge days in October, Island Vibe is a multi-faceted celebration of Island Culture that includes art exhibitions, craft and music workshops, film space, stalls and food markets. 2008 will see over 60 mighty reggae, soul and roots acts from all across Australia and the Pacific – including a Murri and Pacific Islander dance and cultural program – gather on Minjerribah (Stradbroke) October 24 – 26 for a celebration of music, dance and art.

Island Vibe is held on the world famous Point Lookout on Minjerribah (Stradbroke). Only 90 minutes from Brisbane, the festival site itself is located in the park beside the stunning Home Beach, allowing festival-goers to bask in the cooling azure waters of the South Pacific.

The Bands

Island Vibe Festival 2008 is proud to announce that Ernest Ranglin will be making the trip to Australia for the three-day festival. The legendary 76-year-old Jamaican musician is credited with creating reggae and ska, and played on the very first Studio One records as a session musician. Ranglin is the man who taught Bob Marley how to play guitar, and has been awarded the Order Of Distinction from the Jamaican Government for his contribution to music. It is a massive privilege to have Ernest Ranglin headline Island Vibe 08, in what is most-probably his final-ever trip to Australia.

Joining Ranglin are Kiwi-favourites Katchafire, Olmecha Supreme and Little Bushman along with Sydney squires The Bird and Melbournian’s Symbiosis, Mista Savona and Natty Sistren in the massive Island Vibe line-up. World champion surfer Dave Rastovich and his group Band Of Frequencies will roll in from Byron, along with fellow Northern NSW locals Saritah, The Witness, Simon Asquith and Grasshopper. Mellifluous and The Sneaky Weasel Gang will make the trek from WA, Zennith and Sian Evans will head south from North Queensland, all on a mission to soak in some beautiful island vibe.

The line-up has been rounded out by a heavy splattering of South-East Queensland’s finest roots and reggae acts, including Banawurun, Mr Laneous & The Family Yah, Kooii, Dubmarine, Kafka, Schoolfight, Golden Sounds – The Outfit, Chocolate Strings, The Kelly Gang, The Rude and The Upsteppers.

Add that to Jack & The Giant Killers, The Long Green Beans, Pear & The Awkward Orchestra, Pure Velour, Kingfisha, Rhiannon Hart, Georgia Potter, Spacehelicopters, Martini 66’, Roots Above Ground, Amy Cushway and Spankinhide.

Throw in some of Australia’s finest selectors in Rhythm Collision Sound System, Rudekat Sound System, Mirador, Apex, Andy Dub, Krazy Dayv, Mistah Misha, Selecta Bing, Scuba D, Maskram, Resettseser, and Mustapha – not to mention Stradbroke Island locals Paula Boo, Clara Durbidge, Mama Dukes, Pipi Lips, Stradbroke Island Singers and The Yuluburriba Dancers – and undoubtedly Island Vibe have assembled arguably the strongest roots and reggae Australia has seen.

Ticketing

Last years event saw over 2000 people come together for a weekend of stunning music and relaxed community vibes. Due to the constraints of venue size and available accommodation, Island Vibe will limit tickets to 3000, which are expected to sell out – SO GET IN QUICK!
