THE FESTIVAL

Now in its fourth year, the annual Island Vibe Festival at Point Lookout on Minjerribah, (Stradbroke Island) has established itself as one of the leading cultural and music festivals in the South Pacific. The three day event encompasses a large variety of roots and contemporary music, emerging circus performances, traditional dance, speakers’ forum and cultural workshops.

Island Vibe is free for children under 12 (accompanied by an adult), and has a bustling food and craft market and licensed bar. Island Vibe is dedicated to environmental sustainability and encourages the use of renewable resources, recycling, composting, car-pooling and cycling.

Arts Culture & Community

Island Vibe’s Arts, Culture & Community Program celebrates a range of cultures through music, dance, visual arts, performances, forums and workshops. Customary protocols, community consultation, participation, equal representation and a commitment to a better understanding of our collective Island roots are at the forefront of this evolving program.

It provides both artistic and cultural exchange opportunities for the local community, and strives to create harmony among cultures by coming together on equal ground, in a positive environment on a stunningly beautiful island – Minjerribah!

2009 highlights will include more amazing music from Aotearoa, Australia, New Caledonia, and other nations in the South Pacific, as well as the launch of the ‘Island Rhythm Project’ – a week long cultural and artistic exchange between the local Stradbroke Island community and national and international artists, leading into festival workshops, speakers forums and culminating in a one-off collaborative performance.

THE ARTISTS

Chali 2na

Bearing an identifiably deep baritone voice, Chali 2na (born Charles Stewart, Jr.) became the unofficial point man for West Coast hip hop legends Jurassic 5. Originally from southside Chicago, Chali first gained an interest in graffiti writing before getting into music.

Before Jurassic 5 fully took off, Chali 2na and Cut Chemist also helped found the band Ozomatli, whose music was a fusion of worldbeat, rock, hip hop, and Latin dance/funk. As part of two critically acclaimed ensembles, Chali 2na sent waves in the music world with each of their debuts. His solo foray began in 2004 with his Fish Market mixtapes, and his long awaited solo debut Fish Outta Water promises to mark the final stage in Chali’s creative evolution, bringing together a diverse range of influences and collaborators including Damien Marley, Beenie Man, Anthony Hamilton and the late great J Dilla.

His 4-piece live stage show is a progression from the days of Jurassic 5 and embraces a more serious and inspired creative mission than any of his previous work. Having had over ten years of preparation, Chali 2na, the elder statesman of West Coast hip hop is finally ready to unleash his solo assault on Australian audiences. Catch Chali 2na whn he hits the Island Vibe stage for his ONLY Queensland show.

Natiruts

Brazilian reggae pioneers Natiruts are set to make their first trip to Australia to headline the 2009 Island Vibe Festival. Formed in Brasilia in 1996, Natiruts have led a reggae revolution in their home country, bringing their uniquely Brazilian sound to the forefront of the musical landscape. Their 1997 release Nativus sold 450,000 in Brazil alone, starting a remarkable trend they have continued over the group’s 5 other albums, including their most recent Raçaman.

Mixing traditional reggae techniques with their Brazilian roots, Natiruts incorporate elements of bossa nova, dancehall and backbeat, creating a distinctive sound that has been recognised worldwide. Coming off a recent tour to Europe which included a highlight set at the Rotonton Sunsplash European Reggae Festival, Natiruts are preparing to make a massive splash at this year’s Island Vibe.

Mista Savona

One of the few Australian reggae producers to be making a name internationally, with collaborations with top Jamaican artists such as Anthony B and Horace Andy. Mista Savona’s album ‘Melbourne meets Kingston’ was a milestone in Australian reggae. Mista Savona, who is also an acclaimed keyboardist and band leader, will be touring later this year with a full band and will be taking the mainstage at this year's Island Vibe.

House Of Shem

House Of Shem hail from Aotearoa, New Zealand and like many legendary reggae groups this band is built around the classic harmony trio format. At the helm is Carl Perkins, a man with over thirty years experience writing and playing reggae music. As a former member of Herbs, Mana and the Twelve Tribes of Israel Band amongst others, Carl’s musical credentials are impeccable. Joining him up front are two of his sons, Te Omeka and Isaiah who not only provide harmonies but both of whom also write, take turns at singing lead and play keyboards as well. It is this blood link and family bond that renders the sound of their combined voices as something really extraordinary. Each of the three has their own distinct song writing style and voice, effectively giving the band three different lead singers. The harmonies are sublime and the precision of their ensemble performance is phenomenal.

The Nomad

Multi-talented with achievements to match, The Nomad (Daimon Schwalger) has taken the road less-travelled in search of the good groove. Seamlessly fusing hip hop, drum ‘n’ bass, soul and jazz, with trip hop and dub, The internationally-renown DJ/producer has crafted a significant and successful career for more than a decade both behind the decks and in control of his production studio. Having released five albums to date and with his sixth due to drop in late 2009, The Nomad’s return to Island Vibe will showcase his latest offerings, as well as his much-loved old faves.

Sunshine Sound System

Sunshine Sound System formed when DJ Downtown Brown (aka Simon Hendl) and P Digsss (aka Paora Apera) got together for a jam in Queenstown in 2000. They unashamedly jam the whole range of music that they love, typically including lots of fresh bootlegs, a bit of reggae & dub, plenty of hip hop, dancehall, original skool soul and funk including a few crate-digger breaks – plus if the mood takes them a badboy fusion of old skool ragga junglism, breaks and D&B. With the Sunshine Sound System Crew often busy with other collaborations and projects, this is a rare chance to catch them in Australia live.

Afro DizziAct (feat. Jali Buba Kuyateh)

Over the past 10 years Afro Dizzi Act have performed at international festivals & concerts in Nepal, India and Dubai. Throughout this time the boys from Brisbane had a dream & goal to study, collaborate & perform with as many different cultures as possible to help enrich their own sound as well as creating a unique global melting pot of influences that could inspire them with their own sonic creations. This dream & passion has led them to perform with legendary artists such as Trilok Gurtu (India), Wala (Ghana, West Africa), Ralph Thomas (France), Cadenza (Nepal), Chris Berry, Panjea (USA, Africa) & Don Burrows (Australia).

Laneous & The Family Yah

The 'Lovable Tramp with the clamped, cramped fist in the air', Laneous is the conceptual poet for the Backbeat Generation. Devoting his life to music since dropping out of high school at the age of 15, Laneous's musical vision has been unfaltering. Born into the Bohemian south-Brisbane community that he's now so heavily a part of, Laneous has spearheaded a new Brisbane-born movement of edgy groove, hip hop bounce and soul glaze. Spotlight artists on Triple J Unearthed in June 09 and named amongst Hip Hop's Hottest in J Mag's City by City 'Oz Hip Hop Special', it would be no overstatement to say that Laneous And The Family Yah have recently become one of the most talked about bands in Brisbane and around the country.

As well as Kingfisha, Sunshine Bros, Oka, Bonjah, Spacifix, Saritah, Fyah Walk, Nicky Bomba, Grrilla Step, Lotek, Chocolate Strings, The Upsteppers, Georgia Potter and Declan Kelly.
