A late cancellation gave Sunshine Coast resident Charles Griffith his place in the field and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands emerging from the water in first place.
An elite bunch was soon hot on his heels and the lead changed hands frequently throughout the 18km mountain bike leg. It was eventual Men’s winner, Rob Symmons who cemented his lead during the tough 8km coastal run course and never looked back taking the honours in 1 hour 22 minutes.
The competition wasn’t as close in the women’s field with Ali Wright dominating her rivals and finishing almost 9 minutes clear of second place, a commendable effort in challenging conditions.
As competitors crossed the finish line the occasional grimace soon made way for smiles as the realisation of what they had just achieved hit home. As the event base filled up with finishers of all ages and physiques, it was clear that this is not just an event for the elite. Just by completing the 27km Straddie Salute course, each competitor had good reason to be proud of their day’s efforts.
Event Director, John Guise commented that the response to last year’s inaugural Straddie Salute had been fantastic with this year’s field almost trebling that of last year. He noted however that “we were keen to preserve the intimate feel of the event and ensure that the special Straddie experience was not lost”.
Men’s winner, Rob Symmons treasured the Straddie Salute trophy saying “this feels like the Clive Churchill for skinny triathletes” and gave a glowing report of the event saying that “the course was amazing and the event has a very special feel to it”.
Redland City Mayor, Melva Hobson presented the majestic hand carved winners trophies, the smiling faces affirmed that all in attendance were already planning their return to Straddie next October.
