Spectacular Whale Watching Right Now!
(17 August 2010)

A group of whales encircled the mother protectively and waited patiently until the new baby whale was welcomed by all to great excitement both in the water and on the beach. The last few days of clear skies and calm seas have made for ideal whale watching conditions and the whales are enjoying frollicking in the perfect conditions. This morning on Home Beach two whales were caught in a gutter just off the beach and as the tide was going out, they were in grave danger of being caught in the shallow water. A group of people watched on helplessly as the whales tried to find a way back out to deeper water but became instead perilously close to becoming trapped. As the people on the sand observed, a group of more than a dozen dolphins entered the gutter and swam around the whales seemingly giving them information. The dolphins continued to circle the whales as if rounding them up, the whales followed their lead and eventually all left safely back out to sea with much fin and tail waving as they left for deep water. There seems to be a special relationship between the dolphins and the whales and every year they meet up and communicate with each other and great numbers of dolphins amass off the headland in anticipation of their arrival.
The whale season continues through to the end of October, so if you haven't already witnessed this spectacle, make some time to come to Straddie and see them for yourself, it will be an experience you will never forget.
