The recent heavy seas, high winds and relentless rains have caused a mass stranding of migrating Mutton Birds many of which have died struggling against exhaustion on Main Beach and the Bathing Gorge. It is a tragedy of high proportions as hundreds of birds litter the high tide mark and others flutter feebly in the wash of the waves, a heart breaking sight in a battle for survival. The EPA is investigating the true cause of death of these birds today to determine if it is purely exhaustion that has caused their unfortunate demise or if there are other factors to consider.
While one species is battling for life another quite different species thrives. For the first time in recent memory there is a wide band of Ghost Crab holes running the full 35km length of Main Beach. Long time resident and ardent fisherman John Goebel, said that he had never seen Ghost Crab holes in such profusion since he has been on the Island. Somewhere in the equation there lies a form of balance, but it is hard to watch the birds suffering after covering such long distances.
