At www.straddieonline.com.au we are aiming to raise awareness of the plight of all the species of whales roaming our oceans. We feel personally grateful that we have the opportunity to see Southern Humpback Whales pass by the Island from June to October each year, and to marvel at the leap of faith they have made to continue to migrate through Moreton Bay, once the killing fields for so many of their forebears.
We are compiling a list of signatures to be presented to the International Whaling Commission and the next Earth Summit as a strong show of support for these gentle giants.
“Save the Whale” was a catch cry of the seventies, and the result was an increased awareness and a common goal to help. The initial campaign found willing support the world over.
Thirty years on, there is still a pressing need to “Save the Whale” as seven out of the eight species of great whales is still endangered. Whaling has slowed but has not entirely stopped, and now, it is primarily the pollution of their aquatic environment which poses the biggest threat to their survival.
The Blue Whale is facing extinction right now, and we may lose this giant of the sea within ten years. Marine biologists fear that underwater noise pollution may be the cause of their demise. Their number has decreased dramatically from 250,000 to just a few hundred. They are the largest mammal on earth and the only living thing able to be seen from space.
Show your concern and support by signing our petition; we hope to add one million signatures from all over the world to show that people still do care, that they want action at the highest level to preserve the planets whale populations, and to present a united front to “SAVE THE WHALE” into the new millennium and beyond.
