Easter Report from Sergeant Peter Twort - Dunwich Police

Easter is upon us, and traditionally it is one of the highest risk period for road users. Dunwich Police will be conducting Operation Aphrodite throughout the entire Easter period, commencing on Thursday the 20th through to the end of the School Holidays.

This operation is aimed at traffic enforcement, with high visibility throughout the day and evening, on all road ways and beaches of the island.

RBT will be performed extensively throughout, along with traffic enforcement focusing on Speed, Seat Belts, Overloading, Riding in back of utes etc.

The aim of this operation is to ensure the safety of all road users on Straddie over the Easter Period.

I encourage everyone to do the right thing - do not speed, always wear a seat belt, do not ride in utes or overload vehicles, and do not drink and drive. The chances of being charged is highly likely if you do. We do not want to see you ruin your holiday by being charged or fined.

Also please be aware that the same road rules apply on the beaches as on the roadways. The speed limit for Flinders Beach is 40kph, and Main Beach is 60kph. Consideration for beach users is also requested, please slow right down when passing families on the beach because people, kids in particular, do not hear on- coming vehicles on the sand and they may not see you in time.

If you need Police do not hesitate to contact us on 3409 6020.

Dunwich Police wish all Island residents, and visitors a safe and enjoyable Easter.

November Report from Sergeant Peter Twort - Dunwich Police

BIKE HELMET NOTICE

There are considerable numbers of youths, and some adults, who do not wear stack hats when riding push bikes. It may not seem a major issue, but they do significantly reduce the risk of serious head injury in the case of an accident.

Dunwich Police have been warning riders in the past and directing them to walk their bikes. This has filtered through to some; however it is consistently observed that the problem continues.

Commencing Monday 12 November 2007, the BON (Bicycle Offence Notice) system will commence. This operates with the “offending” cyclist receiving a BON, similar to a Traffic Ticket, however it does not carry a fine, and is only recorded locally at the Police Station.

If the rider gets a second BON and is under 17, a letter is sent to their parent.

If the rider gets a third BON and is under 17, a caution is administered under the Juvenile Justices Act.

If the rider gets a fourth BON or upwards, they will be going to court.

If an adult 17 and upwards gets more than two BONS, then they are issued a Traffic Offence Notice.

I urge all parents to please buy your kid a stack hat and make sure they wear it, not to avoid strife with the BON system, but for your own child’s safety.

Regards

Sergeant Peter Twort
