DIXIE LAMBERT

Sculpture   Paintings   Murals   Environmental Ceramics

Dixie Lambert was born in Sumatra in 1928 in what was then the Dutch East Indies. Sent to Australia for safety during W.W.2, he was a boarder at St. Josephs in Sydney, later moving to Melbourne to be reunited with his family who had miraculously survived internment by the Japanese.

In his late teens he attended the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne where he studied under Alan Sumner. After moving to Queensland he became involved with ceramics studying under Hatton Beck. Always an artist who had hands-on involvement with his work, he designed and made sculptures in many mediums, from ceramic through to steel, bronze casting, cement and wood. During the last twenty five years, Dixie has worked mainly in the architectural field as well as with teaching commitments in the field of painting and sculpture and also carrying out commissions in copper, bronze, ceramic tile, concrete and wood.

Early in his career in Queensland, Dixie fell in love with North Stradbroke Island, in particular, with Point Lookout. This passionate involvement was never to end, first as a regular holiday maker and later as a permanent resident making commercial ceramics as well as commissioned works. During this time he was a foundation member of the Brisbane Sculpture Society, regularly exhibiting in their annual shows. In addition he was lecturing at what was then Q.I.T., later to become Q.U.T in drawing, design and colour studies for interior design.

In later years his early commitment to painting resurfaced with particular emphasis on water colour. This application of his always vigorous expression to this medium has resulted in an entirely new understanding both in colour and technique of this well practiced field.

Dixie has exhibited as a member with the Water Colour Society of Queensland and has had a number of one man exhibitions. In 2005 he was the winner of this society’s abstract contemporary prize. This commanding interpretation was a result of a two month stay in a remote area of Mexico in that year. At present he is working towards an exhibition which will portray his Mexican experience.

Dixie’s water colours have evoked great interest in art lovers and are represented in collections in Australia, U.S.A., Canada, U.K., New Zealand and Mexico.
